Project Live; a New Zealand perspective on Home based support - simple,
researched and powerful.
Abstract:
Northern Health School is one of three state funded health schools
servicing the educational needs of New Zealand students who are
chronically ill and unable to attend their regular school. Our teachers
provide support for these students in hospital and at home and also assist
with their transition back to their regular school..
After a considerable amount of research and with the support of our Board
of Trustees, we have developed a system of on line tutorials, using
desktop sharing software, loaned hardware and an ADSL connection supplied
through sponsorship from Telecom. The project aims to increase the amount
and quality of face to face time students receive and to use a digital
environment to extend the use of higher order thinking skills. We are
currently running a trial with 5 students who are connected to their
teacher with a desktop PC, a webcam, digitising board and Smart’s
Bridgit and Notebook software.
This workshop will outline the environment in which the Northern Health
School operates, look in detail at the way Project LIVE works and will
include a LIVE demonstration (probably one we prepared earlier, as our
students will all be asleep!) Workshop attendees will have the opportunity
to participate in a LIVE session and will be presented with information
about issues such as “Cybersafety” and the results of the trial so
far, including comments from students, parents and teachers.
